Health risks: Consumer advocates do not recommend the consumption of avocado seed products
For some time now, avocado core powder has been experiencing real hype as a “superfood” that you can make yourself. The ingredients are said to have a positive effect on muscles, cholesterol levels, fat burning and the body's defenses. But consumer advocates do not recommend the consumption of such funds.
Avocados are healthy. The fruits contain numerous vitamins and minerals, such as potassium, which make an important contribution to a healthy heart. Avocados can also help you lose weight thanks to the unsaturated fatty acids it contains, which the body cannot make itself. Agents containing avocado, on the other hand, could possibly harm health. Consumer advocates therefore advise against consuming such products.
Health benefits not proven
For some time now, recommendations have been circulating in lifestyle media to use the avocado core and stir it into the muesli, smoothie or salad dressing as a finely ground powder.
In addition, avocado core powder is already available as a dietary supplement.
Such funds are said to have numerous health-promoting properties.
As the Consumer Center Bavaria reports on its website, the amino acids, carotenoids or bitter substances it contains should avoid cardiovascular diseases, strengthen the immune system, boost fat burning, help with muscle and joint pain, prevent thyroid disorders and epilepsy and of course inhibit cancer .
According to consumer advocates, research on this is still in its infancy.
"The few available studies that were carried out in a test tube or on animals do not provide any evidence of the advertised health-promoting properties in humans," write the experts.
"However, health risks from their consumption cannot currently be ruled out because there are too few studies, in particular on the ingredients of the kernel," explains Silke Noll, nutrition expert at the Bavarian Consumer Center, in a statement.
Sales are not allowed in Europe
According to the consumer advice center, products containing avocado seeds currently fall under the Novel Food Regulation.
According to this, products that were not consumed to any significant extent before May 15, 1997 cannot be sold in the EU until they have been tested and approved.
From the point of view of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), the information available on avocado kernels and powder made from them, in particular on the ingredients of the kernel, is not sufficient to assess health risks that could arise from this product.
Therefore, consumption is not recommended. According to the consumer advice center, the sale of avocado seed-containing food supplements is not permitted in Europe.
Ingredients in the avocado core
As the consumer advocates explain, some smaller studies on the ingredients of the avocado core report a relatively high proportion of fiber and low fat, which is certainly interesting from a nutritional point of view.
In addition, phytosterols, the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin as well as phytochemicals are mentioned.
However, the information in the different studies differs and a final assessment cannot be made.
The bitterness "Persin", which is found in the avocado plant (and also in the core), is considered safe for humans in small quantities, but it is poisonous for almost all pets.
But: "Whether and how the amount of persine contained in the core has also not yet been investigated," says Silke Noll. (ad)
